Traditional knowledge, beliefs and practices on collection of lake flies (chaoborus and chironomus sp.) and their implications on food security

Lake Flies are edible insects with the potential of contributing to food security in that they an alternative protein and micronutrient source freshwater lake regions. The main challenge exploiting flies is difficulty collection. This study was conducted identify sustainable traditional collection practices forecasting techniques implemented Rusinga Mfangano Island Kenya. ethnographic employed multiple methods data collection: focus group discussion (FGD), observations, interview schedules. 5 (3 female 2 male) key informants were selected for schedules aged above 60 years. 48 (19 29 participants took part FGDs divided into 8 sets each containing 6 age range between 18 40 Open kit (ODK) software used while analysis via thematic framework using Nvivo version 10 software. Cultural myths associated included: marriage partner/business customers’ attraction. Uses include libido enhancement, remedy sickness, good fish harvest indicator.
